BP oil spill is still on bottom of Gulf

Blowout in the Gulf: The BP Oil Spill Disaster and the Future of Energy in America

A scientist has video and slides proving mush of the BP oil spill is still on the bottom of the gulf.
(AP) -- Oil from the BP spill remains stuck on the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico, according to a top scientist's video and slides that she says demonstrate the oil isn't degrading as hoped and has decimated life on parts of the sea floor.

That report is at odds with a recent report by the BP spill compensation czar that said nearly all will be well by 2012.

At a science conference in Washington Saturday, marine scientist Samantha Joye of the University of Georgia aired early results of her December submarine dives around the BP spill site. She went to places she had visited in the summer and expected the oil and residue from oil-munching microbes would be gone by then. It wasn't.
"There's some sort of a bottleneck we have yet to identify for why this stuff doesn't seem to be degrading," Joye told the American Association for the Advancement of Science annual conference in Washington. Her research and those of her colleagues contrasts with other studies that show a more optimistic outlook about the health of the gulf, saying microbes did great work munching the oil.

"Magic microbes consumed maybe 10 percent of the total discharge, the rest of it we don't know," Joye said, later adding: "there's a lot of it out there."

Shocker: Methane Levels Quickly Return to Normal after Gulf Oil Spill

Methane Levels Quickly Return to Normal after Gulf Oil Spill

ScienceDaily (Jan. 7, 2011) — Calling the results "extremely surprising," researchers from the University of California, Santa Barbara and Texas A&M University report that methane gas concentrations in the Gulf of Mexico have returned to near normal levels only months after a massive release occurred following the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion.

Findings from the research study, led by oceanographers John Kessler of Texas A&M and David Valentine of UCSB, were recently published in the journal Science. The findings show that Mother Nature quickly saw to the removal of more than 200,000 metric tons of dissolved methane through the action of bacteria blooms that completely consumed the immense gas plumes the team had identified in mid-June. At that time, the team reported finding methane gas in amounts 100,000 times above normal levels. But, about 120 days after the initial spill, they could find only normal concentrations of methane and clear evidence of complete methane respiration.

Oil Leaking from sea floor near capped BP well

AP reported:

The government's point man for the spill, retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen, said late Sunday the seep had been detected a distance from the busted oil well and demanded in a sharply worded letter that BP step up monitoring of the seabed. Allen didn't say what was coming from the seep....

BP reports the hole is plugged

For the first time in 87 days, oil has stopped flowing into the Gulf of Mexico from BP's broken well.

In a test, BP's new containment cap successfully contained the leak starting at 3:25 p.m. ET today, BP confirmed at an afternoon press conference. Live video of the leak showed no oil at the site where plumes of oil had been seen billowing into the Gulf since the disaster began in April.

Underwater video shows the BP cap placed on well to stop oil spill.

Update:
BP says it has reattached the containment cap that was knocked off the Gulf oil leak in a submarine accident earlier Wednesday.

BP Technical Presentation

Even if you are disappointed with BP's response to the gulf oil spill, you may find this technical explanation of what BP is currently doing to mitigate the spill fascinating. They are lots of illustrations and charts, along with a detailed explanation. It is very educational. Click on the image or here for video link.
